In Their Own Words
This song is a rumination on the difficulty of both accepting and giving support in a challenging moment. We were feeling loose and slinky when we recorded it. Like a float on a creek with no one in it. We leaned in to the fuzzy warble of the four track; it felt like the song speaking back to us as we were making it. It kept the float bobbing. Our lifer-bud Dylan recorded and mixed the whole thing to two tracks of our little Portastudio cassette deck through a console I bought for this session. All done at our favorite house-turned studio on Smith Mountain Lake. The water connection runs deep with this one. Dealing with difficulty, whether it’s a transient gut-punch like a breakup, or a seemingly endless and terrifying global pandemic, feels like losing your footing on turbulent seas. The video by Ben Attias captures us in our element: playing live, digging our tones in a gorgeous-sounding room, immersed in each others’ friendship.
